We have made a list of ideas to help your child continue with their development during the school closure. Please find time to work with your child and have a go at some of these activities. Feel free to get creative!

  • Continue to read the reading books we send home from school and share any books you have at home. There is a guide to the progression of reading skills at the back of your comment book.
  • Look at the ‘key words’ that are listed in the comment book, these are to be learnt by sight so they can be recognised in reading books. You could play a game of I-spy and look for them in books and magazines. Focus on two or three at a time, making it as fun as possible for you both.
  • Practice forming letters correctly, there is guidance at the back of your comment book. You could do this in different ways such as writing in salt, sugar or corn flour. You could practice forming numbers too.
  • Keep a diary of what you have been doing at home, including drawings and photos alongside any written work.
  • Search for 2D and 3D shapes around the home.
  • Draw a picture using 2D shapes.
  • Look for numbers and count objects around the home, for example, how many steps/forks/shoes?
  • Sing number songs together.
  • Play a board game as a family.
  • Enjoy baking and cooking together, encouraging your child to mix, pour and weigh. What do they notice about the ingredients?
  • Encourage your child to help with daily tasks such as, setting the table, making the beds, tidying up and sorting the washing.
  • Talk about your wider family and discuss your family tree. Children enjoy looking at photos of family and learning about who they are.
  • Observe signs of spring.
  • Make creations using construction toys such as Lego and junk modelling with recyclable materials.
  • Playing with jigsaws.
